Denver
Mill

The last commercially working Windmill in Norfolk, Denver Mill is not only a centre for Craft Baking and Traditional cereal, milling and flour Technology & training, but also a unique example of how the old and the new country ways of life can be brought together to make a positive contribution in the modern world.

In the heart of North West Norfolk and on the edge of the Fens, Denver Windmill is one mile south of Downham Market where the A10 meets the A1122 and one mile north of the Denver Sluice where the river Ouse connects the inland waterways of England with the tidal waters of the Wash.

At the Mill:

Flour production and Milling - Three generations of Milling on site: wind, oil (a Blackstone open crank engine which we run most days) and electricity (a Barron Dreadnought vertical stone mill).  The Windmill turns whenever there is enough wind, and whilst the repairs on it are being completed, flour production is mostly through our 1960s Barron Dreadnought Stone Mill.

Denver Mill Teashop - Bread baked daily along with a selection of our own home made cakes and scones, snacks and light meals.

The Mill Store - A wide selection of flours & cereals,

Produce and Gifts.  Baking, tea and other hampers made to order, gift vouchers and home-ware.

The Mill Cottages - Three self catering cottages in the old Mill House offer an unequalled relaxing holiday venue nestled in the shadow of the Windmill.

Baking classes -  For young and old, beginners and those with more experience.  Individuals, families, groups and schools catered for.

The Millers Barn -  Meeting and function room with a difference.....

Experience Holidays - new to the Mill this year.  Watch this space!

Schools, Groups and Parties - Individual baking classes, tours and talks put together to suit individual needs.

We have had a lovely Christmas and New Year season with many new as well as old faces. Very best wishes to one and all.

Many of you are aware we ‘sold our souls to the devil’ last year by taking part in the new BBC 2 documentary series Alex Polizzi - The Fixer.

Alex wanted to show some of the problems experienced in family run businesses and offer her help in overcoming them.

It was all a bit of a shock to us because we didn’t apply, someone unknown put Denver Mill forward without telling us, and up until almost the start of filming we were still assuming it was just another five minute slot in a program!

In the end it proved a very worthwhile exercise - we were introduced to some of the most respected heritage, tourism, branding and marketing people in the country and given a very privileged insight into the workings of some prestigious organisations and businesses.  Above all it has been unanimously confirmed that what we are doing here is worthwhile and that definitive action is justified to protect it.

The first of the six programs was broadcast last Tuesday, 31st January and we understand that ours will be the final episode, on Tuesday 6th March, BBC 2 at 8pm.

We haven’t seen it - let’s hope it will be OK!

(Well, two out of three isn’t bad!)

For the first time in her 177 years

Denver Windmill has no sails or stocks

Norfolk - once the leading light for heritage in the country, is now a laughing stock - and not just because of Denver.

As one dedicated Council Officer put it to us: How could so much good have been allowed to be undone by so few, so quickly?
